Roger Hammond was a banker and the fiance of Emily Sullivan. Prior to the September Attacks, during which multiple nuclear bombs detonated in major cities in the United States, Roger wanted to move to Chicago with Emily, but she was attached to the small town of Jericho. This led Roger to move to Chicago without her, in the hopes that she would follow. Not long after however, he changed his mind, opting to book a flight back to Kansas.
While on a flight back to Jericho, the September attacks occured. These attacks forced the pilots of his flight to make an emergency landing in a nearby field, along with several other flights in the surrounding airspace. His flight was one of the few that touched down safely without crashing, and Roger made his way back to Jericho with a group of refugees from his flight.
Following the arrival of Roger and the refugees, the towns supplies quickly diminished. This shortage of supplies led Gray Anderson to attempt evict the refugees from town utilizing the local police force and old riot supplies, including tear gas, to save supplies. During this attempt, Anderson was accidentally shot by Roger, prompting a standoff between him and local police. Following this standoff, the people of Jericho agreed to let the refugees stay except for Roger, who was exiled for his crimes. As Roger left the town, Jake Green gave him a gun to defend himself with.
