"John Smith", also known as David Reynolds, is the unknown and mysterious mastermind behind the September Attacks. He is a Jennings & Rall employee who helped to prepare a continuity of government study in case of nuclear attack on 25 American cities.
However, he became of the opinion that J & R is trying to undermine the federal government so he decided to destroy 25 cities with stolen shipment of nuclear warheads to weaken J&R. In Season 2 he is trying to obtain remaining nuclear warhead to detonate it in Cheyenne where the J & R headquarters is located.
He is wounded in the series finale by Jake. Later on it was revealed in the Comics that John Smith was alive and being held in Loomer Ridge Detention Facility.
After contacting Robert Hawkins, Jake Green and Hawkins rescue him from Loomer Ridge Detention Facility. With a tracking device implanted in his chest, Thomas Valente tracked him for a short time until Hawkins and Jake short the tracker out.
Smith then explains his motives behind the nuclear attack. J&R sent him to Afghanistan to oversee their operations there, but he finds out that many of the the Ravenwood operatives have criminal record and are frequently involved in fights, money laundering and drug abuse. To stop this, he puts them on an unpaid forced leave, but in retaliation they break into his appartment and badly beat him and his wife, who later succumbs to the wounds. John Smith is diagnosed with cancer during his treatment and takes a radiation therapy which is said to kill the cancer cells. Then he gets the idea to stage a nuclear attack to eliminate the corrupt elements in the government.
Smith takes Green and Hawkins to a bunker Smith maintained to obtain the Precipice, Smith's key to unprecedented access to the J&R/ASA network. Unbeknownst to Jake and Robert, entering the bunker tripped an alarm notifying Valente of them entering. Evidently, Smith was aware of this, and had an escape route prepared.
Valente attempted to take out Hawkins, Green, and Smith with a Predator Drone. The bunker is destroyed, but thanks to Smith's escape route, they all escape. Due to the destruction created at the bunker, Valente assumes Hawkins, Green, and Smith are all dead.
We going to need more supplies to get through the winter.
